* Flooring materials made from renewable resources, such as cork, bamboo, marmoleum, wool and sisal carpeting and natural felt undercushion.* Natural products that are hypo-allergenic, such as wool carpeting, marmoleum, stone tiles and cork or hardwood floors. * Man-made carpet fibres that are bio-based, such as Mohawk's Sorona Smartstrand made with Triexta. It utilizes corn sugar, thereby reducing petro-chemicals, in its production. * Man-made carpet fibres made from recycled pop bottles, such as P.E.T. ‘Family Living‘ Carpets, by Mohawk Floorscapes. * The use of carpet tiles, rather than broadloom carpet, for more efficient repairs and less waste. * Carpet recycling.
DESIGN INFLUENCES FOR 2012
* Asian inspired design elements: streamlined, uncluttered, serene, minimalist, with the use of exotic and natural materials, such as silk fabrics, bamboo flooring and Shoji inspired window coverings.* Home as a relaxing retreat: In the master ensuite, a spa-like mood can be achieved with large, rectangular polished porcelain tiles on the walls and smooth, rounded pebbles on the floor to massage the feet. * Art Deco Style from the 1930’s: theatrical contrasts, with the use of sleek, polished wood veneers alongside highly textured carpeting, fabrics and furs. * Mid-Century Modern: Shag carpet is back, so are glass mosaics and elongated subway tiles, textured hand-knitted looks in area rugs, and herringbone patterns in hardwood flooring. * Everything ‘Green’, ‘Sustainable’ and ‘Eco-Design’ inspired. Products that are locally produced and handcrafted. * Wabi Sabi, the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and change. For example: handscraped or wire brushed hardwood flooring, with rough, tumbled stone and oxidized metal tiles, and grass cloth wallpaper.
COLOUR FORECASTS FOR 2012
* Grey-washed browns, charcoal stains, simulated driftwood, handscraped finishes, are the looks you want in hardwood for 2012. Reddish tones and espresso browns are on their way out. Domestic woods such as oak, hickory and walnut are in. * Colours inspired from nature: Bianco Carrara polished marble used with cool water-toned glass mosaics and copper or pewter metallic accents. * Monochromatic, tone-on-tone colour schemes, with bold colour accents of orange, reddish pink, purple or blue-green. * Neutral colour schemes with an emphasis on textural variation: Picture a room with a grey-washed distressed hickory floor, a charcoal metalica shag rug, a grey/white vein-cut marble fireplace and a silver raw silk roman blind. * Extremes in colour with both lightly tinted neutrals and stronger organic brights: Picture light grey walls and graphite slate floors, with frosted white glass subway tiles punched up with brilliant orange inserts. The Pantone colour of 2012 is Tangerine Tango. It looks amazing used with cream and turquoise! For more information, call Inez at 778-896-1758.
